The Basics

Haleakala sunrise tours with round-trip transportation included are the most popular way to see the crater, and save the hassle of navigating to the volcano’s summit in the dark. Many tours also include sunrise-viewing passes for Pu’u’ula’ula Summit, the highest point on Mt. Haleakala, while sunrise bike tours transport you to the peak from where you can enjoy the view and ride back down.

Alternatively, dodge the pre-dawn crowds with daytime trips, guided hikes across the crater floor, or full-day excursions to the crater and other destinations within Haleakala National Park or places such as Iao Valley and the Road to Hana.

Haleakala Sunrise Best Self-Guided Bike Tour with Bike Maui
It was very early, but it is not to be missed!! The sky was so clear you felt like you could touch the stars. The song our guides sung as the sun cam up was amazing. They were very safety oriented about the bike ride down. It was a fantastic experience!

Haleakala sunrise, not to be missed!

Haleakala Sunrise Best Self-Guided Bike Tour with Bike Maui
The guides were very safety conscious and kept us on a good schedule for the entire event. We were never rushed and had plenty of time to take in all the sights we desired. Every guide was very knowledgeable of the history, lore and details of Haleakala Crater and the Hawaiian Islands in general. The bike ride down the crater was fun, safe and easy to navigate on our own. Even then, the guides kept an eye on us and provided assistance, if needed. Highly recommend!

Haleakala Sunrise Best Self-Guided Bike Tour with Bike Maui
Took the self-guided tour. Billy was our driver and tour guide - very educated, passionate and eloquent on Hawaii history, geology and the tour itself. Great experience from start to finish. Bike Maui is safety-first.

The ride was awesome and the guides were very professional and attentive. Having the van fallow was and added safety. The bikes and helmets were in very good shape.

Haleakala Maui Sunrise Tour w/ Breakfast
Excellent tour to Haleakala Crater to watch the sunrise. It was brutally cold but so worth it to see the amazing sunrise over the clouds. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the area and gave us the history of Maui. Highly recommend but be aware that they pick you up at 2:00 a.m.!. There is also a very nice breakfast at a gorgeous restaurant that has a flower garden and gift shop.

Easy Riders Haleakala Downhill Bike Tour: Voted Best Bike Tour in the Universe
This is the tour to book if you want to bike down Haleakala. Safety is a priority on this tour. The rear van prevents cars from passing so you have the road to yourself. The equipment is top notch - everything - the bikes, the helmets, the windbreakers. The best part is the guides - so kind, funny and knowledgeable. I can't wait to come back and book this tour again. Do not miss it.

Haleakala Maui Sunrise Tour w/ Breakfast
Our tour guide was amazing. The views were astonishing. They say to dress in layers, what they really mean is, BRING SNOW GEAR. It is exceptionally cold but worth every minute. Just dress warm.

Majestic Haleakala Sunrise Tour with Pick-up
Billy was a great guide. Got us up the mountain safely and gave us adequate time at the top. He was very knowledgeable and highly recommend this tour! If you're prone to motion sickness take meds when the drive starts, the roads are winding. I gave it 4 stars because the breakfast was bad.

Amazing sun rise experience

Haleakala Maui Sunrise Tour w/ Breakfast
It was an amazing experience. It was cold and incredibly windy but a clear sky. Watching the sun come up out of the clouds was beautiful! The sun rise chant brought it all together. Our tour guide was instructive, funny, and made the drive interesting. Breakfast was yummy, the gardens beautiful and the little store had lots of goodies for sale. Overall I give this tour 5 plus stars.

Haleakala Sunrise Best Self-Guided Bike Tour with Bike Maui
The sunrise was absolutely gorgeous and it wasn’t too crowded so we got to lean on the rail. Our driver, Eddie, was a great storyteller and kept us chuckling at his corny jokes. Yes, he emphasized safety and I was a little nervous but I appreciate the emphasis on safety and directions. Very nice to do self guided. You have to remember the directions but you can stop whenever you want.

DRESS WARM! TEMPS AND WAIT TIME COLDER THAN ADVISED.

Majestic Haleakala Sunrise Tour with Pick-up
- Watching the sunrise and the very cold temperature. Dress as though you are dressing for winter weather. Company's instructions to simply wear layers is misleading. You actually need a winter coat, gloves and hat to truly be comfortable while waiting an hour or more for sunrise in 45 degree temps with significant wind factor.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Sunrise tours typically require very early start times, with most hotel pickups starting around 2am or 3am.

  • It can be chilly on Mt. Haleakala, especially before sunrise and after sunset—bring layers and comfortable shoes, and be prepared for rain.

  • There are no gas stations or outlets to purchase food within Haleakala National Park.

  • Some facilities at the summit are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers, including the Park Headquarters Visitor Center, Haleakala Visitor Center, and Hosmer Grove picnic area.
